Academic Programs

Med-Assist School of Hawaii offers two academic programs. One has been the school’s primary program since 1974, while the other was recently established in 2011.

The Medical Assistant Program was initially established in 1974 and over the years has served to train hundreds of school graduates. It encompasses 575 hours of classroom instruction, and 200 practicum work hours spent at an approved externship site, such as a doctor’s office or medical clinic. The combined total of 775 clock hours is considered the equivalent of 33 semester-based academic credits. The program is structured in seven consecutive five-week academic phases, each comprising 25 days, which usually takes nine months to complete. Tuition for the Medical Assistant Program is $12,125.00, not including required texts and scrubs. Federal financial aid is available.

The Professional Medical Coding Program, established in 2011, utilizes an approved AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders) curriculum, for which the Med-Assist School of Hawaii is an approved AAPC site. Professional Medical Coders have proven by rigorous examination and experience that they know how to accurately code and audit physician's charts. The program entails 120 hours of class instructional time offered over 13 weeks. Upon completion a student will be eligible to sit for the AAPC’s CPC or CPC-A (apprentice) certification examinations. The cost is $1,425.00, not including required texts or registration fees for certification exams. Federal financial aid is not available, but full payment can be remitted in two installments.

Both the Medical Assistant Program and the Professional Medical Coding Program are accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Educations Schools (ABHES). ABHES is the only agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for institutional and specialized accreditation that focuses on health care education and training.
