Types of Aid Available:

1.      Grants:

Federal PELL Grant:  Awarded to students who have not earned a bachelor’s or professional degree. Students must demonstrate exceptional financial need.  Does not need to be repaid.

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG):  Awarded to students who have not earned a bachelor’s or professional degree.  Students must demonstrate exceptional financial need.  Priority is given to PELL Grant recipients.  This grant is based on availability of funds and does not need to be repaid.

2.       Loans:

Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan:  Awarded to students who demonstrate financial need.  The federal government pays the interest of the loan while students are in college and during the six-month grace period after the students graduate, leave school, or enroll less than half time.  The government also pays the interest of the loan during any periods of deferment.  This loan does need to be repaid.

Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan:  May be used to supplement a Subsidized Stafford Loan if the student is an independent student.  Dependent students are eligible to receive an Unsubsidized Stafford Loan only if their parent has been denied a Federal PLUS Loan.  The interest on the loan is not paid by the government, and instead starts to accrue from the time of disbursement.  Students are responsible for the accrued interest, and may pay for the interest as it accrues or have the interest capitalized.  The loan does need to be repaid.  Repayment starts six months after the student has graduated, left school, or enrolled less than half time.

Federal PLUS Loan:  A federal loan for parents of dependent students.  Awarded to parents with good credit histories.  The loan does need to be repaid.  Repayment starts 60 days after the second disbursement.
